Ian Finn - career metrics at scale
Recognised at Scale
A career through-line: showing up at genuinely consequential national moments, at real scale. I led Brexit-era trade infrastructure at the Department for International Trade, and helped scale Tesco's online grocery platform through the defining pressure of the pandemic. Two of the most disruptive periods to hit the UK in the last decade. Prior to those, I delivered (on time) a flagship citizen-facing digital tool for HMRC, reaching roughly 31 million UK taxpayers, built in just nine weeks against an immovable deadline to be live for the 2017-18 tax year.

“Ian really stands out in the fact, he was an instant partner in the team, inquisitive and eager to learn about food retail and all of its nuances, adapt his ways of working to the environment he was in, but importantly willing to share all of his great experience and knowledge from working in different sectors and being able to apply that and improve our ways of working at Tesco. Ian also got out building great rapport with colleagues at the coal face in our stores and customer fulfilment centres, so he could understand the challenges they face every day, and use that learning to ensure what we build as Product Managers makes their roles easier. Engaging, knowledgeable, passionate to develop himself and others, with a real sense of values and focusing on what really makes the difference to our colleagues.”
Matthew Jackson, (then) Tesco
“Ian is an extremely intelligent, organised, industrious person who is passionate about making things better for customers. He works in a very clear, structurally sound way; always rationalising works back the heart of the matter i.e. the customer’s wants and the experience they will receive from such a journey/ service.
It was a pleasure working with him on several projects at Barclays which included: building the Retail Travel Insurance proposition, the Travel Services positioning message and the fulfilment of an online self servicing portal for Home Insurance customers.
I wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”
Paula Cottrell, (then) Barclays Bank
“Ian brings a great blend of creativity and practicality. He has great ideas and practical solutions to business problems which draw on a broad cross-industry knowledge base. But he’s also strong at putting those ideas into practice, especially where there are multiple stakeholders and you need someone to keep it all together. Ian’s also got a positive disposition and a lot of energy. I enjoyed working with him.”
